Panel Discussion Held on the Issue of Sex Trafficking

The Society for Advancement of Criminal Justice organised a Panel Discussion on the topic "Combating Sex trafficking: A Time for Action". The panelists included Hon'ble Justice Ashim Kumar Ray from the Calcutta High Court, Ms. Melita Fernandes from International Justice Mission and Mrs. Debashree Chaterjee, the first woman officer-in-charge of a police station in Calcutta.
The discussion was initiated by the students, which included members of SACJ as well as the Trafficking core group, through brief comments on the Budhadeb Karmakar Judgement and various aspects of Sex Trafficking such as the demand for Human trafficking; Punishments and Authorities under the ITPA; Rehabilitation of trafficked victims etc and the various suggestions which can be introduced in the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act Amendment Bill. Shortly after that, the panelists took over the house for discussion and enriched the knowledge of the audience. The discussion was continued for almost three hours following an engaging question answer session which saw stimulating interaction between the panalists and the student audience.
